Term: 2-Year Interim Contract (Non-Employee) with potential to transition to a permanent employee role
Status: Full-time (Contract)
Compensation: $75,000 Year 1; $80,250 Year 2

Position Summary
The Interim Executive Director (ED) is the founding executive leader of Wenatchee for Immigrant Justice (WIJ), responsible for guiding the organization through its formative stage and into long-term sustainability. This position is structured as a two-year interim contract (non-employee role) focused on establishing WIJ’s nonprofit infrastructure, governance, and operational systems.
Upon successful completion of key milestones including securing nonprofit status and establishing a functioning and supportive Board of Directors, the role has the potential to transition into a permanent, employee Executive Director position, subject to board approval and organizational readiness.
The ED leads organizational formation, capacity building, program direction, and fundraising, while ensuring WIJ remains community-rooted and responsive to immigrant families and directly-impacted communities.
The Interim Executive Director will work in partnership with WIJ’s Coordinating Committee, which currently provides strategic guidance, community accountability, and transitional governance support during the nonprofit formation period.
The Coordinating Committee will:

Provide strategic input and community grounding

Support Board recruitment and development

Assist with fundraising introductions and relationship building

Offer shared leadership during the organization’s formation stage
This role is not expected to build WIJ alone. The Interim Executive Director will have collaborative support from the Coordinating Committee as the organization transitions to a fully seated Board of Directors.

Key Responsibilities
Organizational Leadership & Strategy

Provide visionary leadership and strategic direction aligned with WIJ’s mission and values.

Lead organizational planning, goal setting, and evaluation to strengthen long-term impact.

Ensure WIJ’s programs and advocacy efforts are community-centered and responsive to emerging needs.

Serve as the primary spokesperson and public representative of WIJ.
Organizational Formation & Governance

Lead the process of establishing WIJ as a formal nonprofit organization (e.g., 501(c)(3)), including coordination with legal, fiscal, or technical assistance providers.

Support the creation and development of a Board of Directors, including recruitment, onboarding, training, and ongoing engagement.

Develop foundational governance documents, including bylaws, board policies, and organizational procedures.

Establish clear roles, responsibilities, and communication structures between leadership, staff, and the Board.
Capacity Building & Organizational Development

Build internal systems and infrastructure to support sustainable operations, including HR practices, financial systems, communications, and data management.

Support the hiring, supervision, and onboarding of staff and key contractors as funding allows.

Foster a healthy organizational culture rooted in care, accountability, transparency, and community leadership.

Ensure compliance with nonprofit legal, financial, and ethical standards throughout the interim period.
Program Direction & Oversight

Provide high-level oversight of WIJ’s programs, including Rapid Response, Accompaniment, community education, and emergency support services.

Ensure programs align with strategic priorities and available resources.

Support staff and volunteers in program implementation, evaluation, and improvement.
Fundraising, Development & Financial Sustainability

Lead and support fundraising efforts, including grants, individual giving, events, and donor stewardship.

Cultivate and maintain relationships with funders, donors, and philanthropic partners.

Oversee budget development, financial planning, and fiscal accountability in partnership with finance staff or contractors.

Work with the Board to diversify revenue streams and ensure long-term sustainability.
Community Engagement & Partnerships

Build and maintain strong relationships with community members, grassroots leaders, and partner organizations.

Represent WIJ in coalitions, networks, and public forums.

Support community-led leadership development and power-building efforts.

Contract Term & Transition

This position is a two-year interim contract (non-employee) role.

The intent of the role is to support WIJ through nonprofit formation and early organizational development.

Upon successful completion of organizational milestones—including nonprofit status, board development, and operational stability—the role may transition into a permanent employee Executive Director position, pending Board approval and available funding.

Qualifications
Required
-
Strong alignment with WIJ’s mission and a deep commitment to immigrant justice and equity.

Experience in nonprofit leadership, management, or senior-level coordination.
-
Demonstrated experience in capacity building, organizational development, and strategic leadership.

Fundraising and development experience, including grant writing and donor engagement.

Strong financial literacy and experience managing budgets.
-
Excellent communication, relationship-building, and leadership skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and lead in fast-paced, high-stakes environments. -
Bilingual English/Spanish.

Lived experience within immigrant or directly impacted communities.
Preferred
-
Experience leading or supporting the formation of a nonprofit organization (e.g., 501(c)(3) application, bylaws, board formation).

Experience working with a Board of Directors, including governance and board development.

Knowledge of immigration systems, detention processes, or immigrant rights advocacy.

Experience in rapid response, accompaniment, or community crisis response models.

Experience building partnerships with grassroots organizations, faith groups, or coalitions.

Experience supervising staff, contractors, or volunteers.

Experience managing multi-source funding (grants, individual donors, events).
